The Baking Outside the Box System: Fun, fast, frugal & foolproof.

How does the Baking Outside the Box system work?  It starts with a basic baked dessert mix we call Goody Mix.  (Get your free copy of the Goody Mix Recipe by liking us on facebook and then click on the Goody Mix widget.)

I set out on an adventure over 10 years ago to discover a way to make many different kinds of desserts from one mix.   This idea satisfied my desire for freedom to create, my thriftiness and the need for something homemade and fresh but easy to do.

There was much trial and error, but with the help of family and friends (and a lot of flour and sugar flying in the kitchen) I developed the Goody Mix.

You can easily make dozens of scrumptious things with Goody Mix, like ‘Out of the Box Cake, Snickerdoodles, Cake pops, Double Fudge Chocolate Chewies , Carrot Cake, 3 Minute Cupcake, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies,  Whoopie Cakes, Chiffon Cake,   Dumb Bunny and Disappearing Bars to name a few.  You can use it interchangeably with a store bought cake mix.  You can also adapt ‘from scratch’ recipes to ‘just like a mix’ in your own kitchen!

So after playing with the Goody Mix and making many wonderful, bars, cakes and cookies, I began to wonder if there wasn’t a way to make variations.   I hit upon the thought that I could use some of the Goody mix and add in only as much of other ingredients as necessary.  This would keep the process simple, the ingredients always fresh, and  the batches could be of a moderate to small size.   It would also be extremely thrifty; it used up Goody Mix in a timely manner and you never invested more money or time in ingredients than were absolutely necessary.  After much more testing (and neighbors getting used to me popping by with baked goods for a critique) I developed the 7 Mix-ups.  I use them just like a store mix.  But they are more than that.   They taste better, have no unnecessary chemicals, and are very thrifty and far more flexible than a store mix.

My daughter Angel Peterson has joined me in this adventure and is a constant help and support in new recipe development as well as many of the beautiful photos you see here from time to time.  She has a fun and amazing blog of her own: Fleecefun.  Pop by to look at the many free patterns and crafts she’s created to share with us.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing the Mix-up Recipes as well as some scrumptious treats to get you started.
