I decided to try making my own Keto / Low Carb Hot Chocolate Mix this morning.

When I reached into the cupboard I discovered that I was out of those cute little sugar-free packets of hot chocolate.

I was astounded by how easy it was.  Just 4 ingredients: cocoa, sweetener, and powdered cream.

Powdered Cream?  Yes! This stuff is my new low carb hero.  I’d purchased a jar of it from Amazon to experiment and decided to try it in my Low Carb Hot Chocolate Mix Concoction.

Powdered cream is interesting.  It doesn’t whip up, but is good for a lot of things you could put liquid cream in and the brand I bought tastes good.  (See it here.)

Above:  Two experimental mugs of Hot Chocolate Mix.

(I’ll admit here that I actually bought the powdered cream to make something else wonderful and promise to post it soon!)

You are probably wondering which sweetener I used.  I used Splenda for this batch.  I actually think any zero calorie, pour-able, cup-for-cup sweetener that would dissolve in hot water will work.  You choose.

I did have to stir it just a bit longer than commercial hot chocolate mix. After I stir thoroughly it remains as well suspended in the liquid as any other mix.

I didn’t mind the extra stirring  though, because I think this luscious stuff tastes so much better than those little packets. I especially like knowing exactly what’s in it.

Best of all It has only 5.4 carbs per serving total! (net carbs are 2.5. Crazy low, right?)

I was super shocked when I looked at the back of the empty sugar-free hot chocolate box from the store and discovered it had 11 carbs per packet and no fat to speak of.  Arrg.  How did I miss that when I bought it?

Low Carb Hot Chocolate Mix in the morning is my plan for how I’m getting through the holiday season this year.  And yes, I’m putting a little something extra in it: cream. Or butter. Or coconut oil. OH YUM!

Yup, I bulletproof my Low Carb Hot Chocolate Mix by adding a little fat.  After the holidays are over, I think that drinking this every morning might be a really hard habit to break, though I’m not sure why I would.

It’s delicious and I feel good and have energy until lunch.  Then I eat as I normally would and just close the kitchen at 8 pm.  I’ve already lost three pounds and I don’t feel guilty for the occasional holiday party-cheat. So far it has made my holidays more enjoyable and less stressful. Maybe it well help you too and that’s always my hope when I share my recipes with you. -Enjoy! Laura

Hi there! Thanks for sharing. I think it is so important that we share that life without sugar is not only possible but enjoyable! Seeing your recipe makes me think of how I travel on KETO. I use a powdered MCT to make a version of bulletproof coffee. It acts like a cream as well. You can find it on Amazon also. I thought I would share.

Thanks for this post, I had not heard of powdered heavy cream before but what a great idea!
I can’t wait to get some and try this recipe. I will definitely try the powdered cream in coffee too!

Is there an alternative to the heavy cream powder?

Ok, this is only a guess, but maybe coconut milk powder. I just bought a bag and I haven’t tried it yet for taste and texture. It has one more carb per tablespoon than the cream powder.

Just use regular heavy cream and/or try making it with unsweetened almond milk! So much better than water!

Just thought I’d let you know… I tried making it with a sugar free pudding mix and it added quite a few carbs without an obvious improvement in texture… try stirring in 1 tbsp of Gluccomanan powder (also called Konjac root powder) to the entire recipe. Gluccomanan thickens in heat, unlike gelatin or xanthan which thicken upon cooling. I’ve been doing this and have found it creates a better ‘mouth feel’ for me. Best wishes for your health journey!

Hi Laura! Can I substitute Xylitol for the Splenda, and if so, would it be cup for cup? If not, what other sweetener would you suggest? Thanks.

I’m sorry, I haven’t used xylitol myself. You could use Swerve as it can be used cup for cup.

I was so excited to get my powdered cream from Amazon yesterday, and made up a batch of this, using Erithritol (sp?) as my sweetener, as powdered cup for cup stevia and splenda usually have other stuff in them that can cause blood sugar spikes. Otherwise followed to the letter. I was sorely disappointed. Taste was good, but the consistency was just like chocolate water. It didn’t have anything near that “mouth feel” of a good cup of cocoa. I thought the cream powder would thicken it up even just a little bit, but it didn’t. Anyone tweaked this to thicken it? I mixed a teaspoon of Xanthan gum into the container of mix, but didn’t get to try it last night as I was at my carb limit for the day. Not sure if it will help, or if I need to add more or less. And I need a powder mix as my son plays on a travel hockey team and I want something I can just add hot water to on the road, otherwise I’d make it myself at home just using regular cream.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I’m so sorry you were disappointed in the mix. I’ myself haven’t had a problem with the texture. I would love to know if adding the xamthan made the texture better for you. Please let us all know? 🙂

I love this this! I’m t2 diabetic and have been making a hot chocolate mix for a couple of years but they were meh but this one with the heavy cream powder is so good. I used Swerve as the sweetener and I made a batch with terular sugar for my husband.

Is the baking chocolate cocoa powder?

Yes, thank you. Baking chocolate is actually a different product and is not a powder. It says ‘baking’ to be clear for those who think cocoa is a sweetened chocolate powder. I’ve added the word powder to the recipe to be even clearer.

This mix was very good. You need to purchase heavy cream powder that is only heavy cream, your cocoa powders vary a lot so find one that has the flavor you enjoy. For me I added additional ingredients to my taste. I personally add salt, instant coffee granules, vanilla bean powder and after it is mixed a teaspoon of butter to each cup. I found keto sweeteners to be over-the-top sweet so salt goes in every recipe and it works to balance out the sweetness.
