#BakingOutsidetheBox | Stir up a little clean fun for the kids with this Bath Time Play Dough Recipe. Easy and takes just a few minutes to make.

I recently received a reader’s request for my Bath Time Play Dough recipe.  I mentioned in the article about the Easy DIY Bathbars that I used to make ‘Bath Taffy’  for my kids.  The kids have all flown the nest and I’ve updated the name and the recipe for you.

In creating this formula, I gathered together all the ingredients I thought would be soothing and yet still make a fun Bath Time Play Dough.  The recipe ingredients include; baking soda, cornstarch, powdered oats, shampoo (I use baby shampoo), oil (I used coconut, but almond and canola also work), water, food coloring (opt) and glycerin (opt).

It doesn’t take long to put together and stir up.  In fact my typical cooking time is just a bit under 3 minutes.  When it is finished cooking, you just dump it on to a silicon mat or a clean counter and when it is cool enough, oil your hands lightly and knead the dough a few times.  It’s now ready for play and a batch makes about 1 1/2 cups.

It’s fun to roll out the dough to about 1/2″ in thickness and cut out ‘cookies’, roll it into beads or just scoop a small handful straight from the jar to play with.  Enjoy! — Laura

Here is a list of facts, suggestions and a gift idea about the Bath Time Play Dough:

  1. Dough will remain fresh for a month in the refrigerator.
  2. One single batch of dough can last through several bath times.
  3. A walnut-sized piece of Bath Time Play Dough is a good amount for a bath.
  4. It can withstand being submerged several times before disintegrating, but it will last the longest if played with on edge of tub.
  5. It can be safely washed down the drain.  (Crumble it into small pieces or dissolve first!)
  6. Bath beads: Roll dough into inch size balls and allow to dry thoroughly, 24-48 hours. Crumble 2-3 under faucet for a skin smoothing experience.
  7. No bake bath cookies: Roll or pat dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut out with small cookie cutters.  Allow to dry and use in the tub like bath beads.
  8. In the kitchen: Keep a dish with a small amount of dough next to the sink.  Softens and soothes hands that must be washed frequently.
  9. Recycle:  Dough can be reconstituted.  Crush or pulverize dry Bath Taffy and add a small amount of water.  Knead into clay.
  10. Cookie dough scents: Use a very mild or unscented shampoo and then add 1/2 tsp. each of cinnamon and ginger or try adding 1 tsp. cocoa to dough.
  11. Be certain to tell the kids it’s not to eat!
  12. Gift idea: Wrap small pieces tightly in plastic wrap to resemble little candies.  Place in jar or candy dish. Add a tag: ~Bath Taffy:  Play with 1-2 taffies in tub. Rub body to get clean, soft skin. Taffies dissolve in water and can be crumbled and washed down the drain.  Keep in refrigerator.
