The idea to make the Elegant Maple Pigs in a Blanket came to me while staring into the fridge.  (Funny isn’t it, the places that inspiration strikes?)

I found one lone tube of unbaked crescent rolls in the fridge that I hadn’t baked up for a recent big family dinner.  I had leftover ham and cheese…and apples.  I remembered a sandwich I’d enjoyed at a little eatery that had these ingredients.

Looking online I discovered that there were a number of versions  It seemed easy and quick which was nice because it was lunchtime and I was hungry.  When I opened the fridge to grab my ingredients, I noticed the maple syrup and on a whim, grabbed it too.  Some of the recipes I found online called for honey or brown sugar, but maple sounded just right somehow.

HAC ready to roll

It was so simple.   I just separated the rolls and laid them out on  cookie sheets while the oven was warming.  I thinly sliced the apple and chopped up the ham.  The cheese was pre-sliced.  I stacked the ham and cheese at the wide end of each crescent dough triangle, drizzled it with a bit of maple syrup goodness and rolled them up.

I popped them in the oven looking like the most glamorous ‘Pigs-in-a-Blanket’ ever.  Less than 15 minutes later the crescents, with melty cheese and warm apple n ham were ready to serve to my small but hungry crowd.

It turned out that the maple was an excellent guess.  These are great served with a bit of honey mustard on the side for dipping.  They could be used as hearty appetizers and I’m sure they would disappear quickly.  –Laura
